Scratchboard

Students just finished a Scratchboard Unit. They began by finding a photo that they wanted to base their scratchboard off of. Then, using Adobe Photoshop, they made their photo black and white and and bumped up the contrast. Next, students taped their photo over a piece of scratchboard and traced around the contour lines. Scratchboard is black and when scratched with needle like tools reveals a white, silver or gold interior layer. Students where instructed to scratch away the light areas of their image, building up different values through hatching. Here are the results!

Masks

Masks are made all over the world. They transform the wearer, exaggerating some form of power. Seward High's Ceramics Class made their own masks. Students began by drawing out their designs, they then draped slabs of clay over face molds and sculpted from there. I was impressed with the results!
